Happy Black History Month!!  Each year, it has become a tradition to focus on a theme for Black History Month.  In years past we had the “Unsung Series” to recognize heroes that you rarely hear about.  We had “Her Name Is” in honor of my maternal grandmother, and last year, we had “I Am Black History”.

This year, my theme is African American Military Heroes.  Some of them we have heard of, some will be new.  There are soooo many African Americans who have made exceptional contributions to society and our country, I stand in awe of each of them.

But given the current climate of our country, it is my honor to recognize African American military heroes who stood the line, and refused to retreat to preserve our freedom.  Even in the face of slavery, segregation and discrimination they stood tall, protecting and defending the country they loved.  They are American trailblazers who set the standard for us, and set the bar high.  Now the torch has been passed to us.  Will we live up to their ideals of Freedom, Justice and Equality for all?

Revolutionary War

• Crispus Attucks (c. 1723 – March 5, 1770) – First martyr of the American Revolution (Boston Massacre, 1770).  Crispus Attucks was an American whaler, sailor, and stevedore of African and Native American descent who is traditionally regarded as the first person killed in the Boston Massacre, and as a result the first American killed in the American Revolution.
